Abstract:

A comprehensive study was made on dielectric rod radiators to develop them for use in microwave antenna systems. Several models were designed and constructed using various dielectric materials and advanced design techniques. Theory, design data, and impedance characteristics of these radiators, along with the properties of the dielectric rod materials are given. Performance characteristics for both single and multiple dielectric rod antenna designs are presented demonstrating a variety of feeding techniques. These end-fired radiators have high gain, low side lobes, high decoupling between individual elements, and, in some cases, broad bandwidth characteristics. They are efficient with good directivity and can be compactly designed with small aperatures. Because of these outstanding features, which can be seen from the results presented, dielectric rod radiators offer a decided advantage over electromagnetic horns and other types of microwave antennas.
