Feedback Stabilization Techniques for Low Frequency Instabilities in the Hollow-Cathode Arc.

The report describes research in the area of remote control of plasma instabilities by the technique of feedback stabilization. A theoretical analysis is developed to describe the physical mechanisms of the instability. Inclusion of a term representative of the feedback suppressor signal shows control of the initial growth rate of the oscillation. A non-linear analysis predicts the observed variations of instability amplitude when the system is perturbed by the feedback system. The experimental investigation was performed on a hollow-cathode arc discharge in argon. Modified author abstract
