Abstract:
Analysis and experiments were performed to prove the feasibility of an underwater imaging system based on acousto-optical imaging for sonar applications at frequencies from 25 to a few hundred KHz. Experimental results confirming sensitivity and resolution are presented together with images of insonified objects at a distance of 15 feet the maximum allowed by the size of the test facility. A novel heterodyning technique was devised to perform low frequency imaging. Based upon the laboratory experiments, range and resolution achievable with the acousto-optical imaging sonar are estimated. Construction of a high resolution acousto-optical imaging sonar is entirely feasible.
