Microscopic organisms form a brown layer, two to four cm thick, on the bottom surface of sea ice in the spring near Barrow, Ak. Phytoplankton and benthic microalgae have been studied to try to determine the origin and ultimate fate of ice organisms. The three communities are described in terms of species composition, primary productivity, and standing stock. Salinity and nutrient concentrations are given for the ice and the seawater. Author
