Abstract:
Plastic rocket propellant of the polyisobutene-ammonium perchlorate type undergoes a physical aging on long-term storage. Chemical, infrared, and chromatographic studies show that the oleate ester wetting agent used in propellant manufacture undergoes oxidation upon storage of the propellant. The addition of a few percent of antioxidant inhibits the oxidation of the oleate function, and propellant formulated with wetting agent treated with antioxidant ages to a lesser extent than that formulated with untreated wetting agent.
