Abstract:
While viewing the terrain or some visual display device, naval personnel must attend to signals presented in the periphery. Whether such signals are detected depends upon the luminance of the signals, the duration of the signals, the interval of time separating successive signals, and the number of signals presented. These four visual variables were examined, in psychophysical experiments, and simple empirical laws were derived to describe the relations among the variables. Modified author abstract
