The report describes the measurement of physical constants of a medium by an all optical technique. From the temporal behavior of the light diffracted by transient, optically induced gratings, the velocity of sound and thermal diffusivity of several materials have been determined and semiconductors carrier lifetimes have been determined. The method can be extended to the measurement of acoustic attenuation. Bulk properties of small samples can be measured without surface effects by inducing small optical perturbations in the refractive index delta nn approximately equal 10 to the minus 5th power. Author
