The report presents the results of a study of fault-tolerant computing. Existing and new architectural techniques are evaluated for use in cost-effective systems attaining desired measures of correctness, availability and recovery. Various architectures and applications are considered. Appendices contain a brief census of 35 fault-tolerant systems, and a concise survey of 17 representative systems, as well as detailed results on reliable memories and arithmetic.
