FEASIBILITY OF ACHIEVING MULTICOLOR CAPABILITY WITH PLASMA PANELS USING TUBULAR-TYPE CONSTRUCTION ARE DESCRIBED. Efficient phosphors have been identified which, when exposed to krypton or xenon discharges, produce the color blue, green, red, and white. These phosphorgas combinations possess characteristics which are sufficient for bistable plasma display operation. A process has been developed for uniformly coating the inside of discharge tubes with phosphor. Brightness and contrast ratio are more than adequate for most display applications. The preferred phosphors are not significantly damaged during operation. Further work to control outgassing and to establish dynamic operating characteristics is warranted. The prospects for successful development of the multicolor tubular plasma display are very favorable. Author
