Small Metalloboron Cage Compounds as Analogs of Metal Clusters. Unifying Concepts of Bonding.

Recently proposed bonding descriptions of electron-delocalized cage compounds including the metal clusters and metallocarboranes, which utilize the number of available bonding electrons and orbitals to predict stable molecular configurations, are examined in the light of recent synthetic work on 5- to 7-atom metallocarboranes which are isostructural with many metal clusters. Numerous examples of electronic and structural analogies between the metal clusters and the metallocarboranes are discussed, and previous suggestions concerning the opening of polyhedral boron cages by electron addition are modified and applied to systems containing metal-metal bonds.
