The objective of this proposed research is to develop and evaluate an artificial tooth replacement that can be placed into edentulous areas to restore function. This tooth substitute will be a prosthesis consisting of two parts the root portion, a metallic implant with an open-pore system of sintered vitallium fiber aggregate attached to a solid vitallium rod and a crown portion attached to the portion of the vitallium rod which extends into the oral cavity. During the last year the female baboon was the experimental animal. The majority of the implants were placed in edentulous ridge at least four weeks after extraction of the teeth. The result of this years investigation are reported. Modified author abstract
