Abstract:

AMAGE, HUMAN FACTORS ENGINEERINGM-60 TANKSNoise measurements were made in an M60A1 tank during four typical operational days of platoon-size maneuvers. The purpose of this study was to determine the average noise to which personnel are exposed, to assess the hearing hazard during typical tank operations based upon TB MED 251 and the CHABA damage risk criterion, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the attenuation provided by tankers helmets. The average sound level of the tank during the operation was 98.5 dBA in the turret and the sound level of the communication system at the ear was about 104 dBA. This study suggests that the primary cause of hearing damage among tank crews is the high speech and noise level produced at the ear by the communication system. Author
