Research data for this study were gathered by personal inspection, interviews, review of defense plans, published Department of the Army literature, and studies. The study group visited several secondary airfields and interviewed personnel concerned with airfield defense. These personnel included US officers assigned to the airbase, US advisors, and selected Vietnamese personnel of Vietnamese units whose responsibility it was to provide perimeter security. Outposts, bunkers, communication centers, barbed wire emplacements, and other defensive positions were examined by the study group, as well as terrain features which affected avenues of approach, defensive fields of fire, defoliation and fields of observation.
