A theoretical model is developed for estimating the costs of a new shipbuilding program for a finite time horizon. It incorporates process analysis providing the means for integrating the engineering features of ships through the commodity technology of the industry and the economic conditions of shipyards through the concept of a process cost function. The model, via a non-linear programming methodology, generates estimates of material and total processing factor costs. The study also deals with some economic implications derived from the model.
