Abstract:

Infrared Spectra were recorded at 4K of samples resulting from the co-deposition of atomic aluminum emanating from an Al2O3 Knudsen cell and 5 O2 in argon mixtures. The spectra exhibited two prominent features, one at 992cm and one at 496cm. The 992cm feature has previously been assigned to Al2O. The 496cm absorption was shown by means of isotopic labelling studies to arise from a species containing two symmetrically positioned oxygen atoms. This species is tentatively thought to be Al2O2.
