The paper describes an integration of expectancy theory and the participative approach to employee motivation. The former is a rational model which predicts that an individual attempts to maximize his pleasure. The participative approach, on the other hand, suggests a more emotional caring-for-people philosophy. The paper describes four ways in which these theories argue that the same processes would increase motivation, and some data are presented that support these predictions. Author
