The thesis investigates the feasibility of simulating the Landing Signal Officer LSOpilot interaction during the approach to a landing on an aircraft carrier. A simulator was created which duplicated the LSOs operational environment through the use of computer-generated visual displays. The LSO and the pilot were placed in this simulated carrier approach environment by 1 displaying a representation of the landing area plus a meatball and angle of attack information to the pilot while 2 simultaneously displaying the aircrafts approach to the LSO. Test results demonstrated the basic feasibility of simulating the LSOpilot interaction and its application as a research tool in studying LSO models, wave-off techniques and landing techniques.
