The purpose of the essay is to study the current military, political, social and financial status of the Ryukyu Islands, collate trends to change the status quo, and analyze impinging factors. The essay concludes that for the immediate future, U.S. presence in the Ryukyus, despite reversion, will remain at approximately the current level to insure the effective discharge of the international obligations assumed by the United States for the defense of countries in the Far East, including Japan, and to protect American investments therein. It further concludes that Japan must accept an increasing military role in defense of its own territory and in support of the peace keeping efforts of the United States and its allies in the Far East.
