Abstract:

The basic question is what is the importance of the Indian Ocean and its rimland. A study was made, focusing on the geographic element of power, to determine the strategic importance of the region. Precarious economics, political fragmentation and dominance of the worlds petroleum supply make this a region of increased emphasis for United States strategy.
