Abstract:

The purpose of the essay is to determine whether South Korea is a strategic asset or liability to the United States and her importance to the security of the Far East. An appraisal of her geography, history and people in connection with the existing Communist threat reveals South Korea is strategically located, possesses a dedicated population with great national pride who live under the shroud of a real and formidable threat. The essay also indicates that South Korea has within the past decade established a viable economy, has achieved significant poltical stability, and possesses a strong, modernizing military force. The essay concludes that South Korea is definitely an important asset to US strategy in East Asia, a dependable ally and is well on the way to attaining self-sufficiency, which will permit gradual US economic aid and troop reductions without jeopardizing her security or growth.
