Information systems, both automated ADP and manual, are currently plagued with problems. While some problems are unique to each particular system, many are common to the generic functions involved in information production and use. By considering information an economic resource, the constructs of microeconomics offer a potential means to study current problems and hypothesize solutions. The essay discusses information as an economic commodity produced by organizations for their own consumption in the decision making process. Economic constructs are then applied to analyze the production of information on a cost - effectiveness basis. Author
