The essay studies misperception in Sino-American foreign policy since 1946. Attention is focused on the freezing of Chinese-American relations in the Korean conflict, the conflicting views on Taiwan, and the two China theory. In evaluating the present thaw in relations and the hopes for the next decade, the influence of the Sino-Soviet rivalry and the resurgency of Japan as an Asian power is examined together with the concept of political expediency as a motivating factor in foreign policy.
