The study was designed to compare the effectiveness of several nonionic surfactants in enhancing defoliation of the bean Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Red Kidney when mixed with 7-oxabicylo 2.2.1 heptane, 2,3-dicarboxylic acid endothall and 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid ethephon. Also, the defoliation dose-response of the bean and the white ash Fraxinus americana L. was determined for polyoxyethylene 20 sorbitan monolaurate Tween 20 when mixed with endothallethephon. All surfactants enhanced the defoliation of the bean equally well at the 1.0 level. Bean plants showed increased defoliation with an increase in Tween 20 from 0.0625 to 1.0. The white ash showed a nonlinear dose-response. The most effective level of Tween 20 was between 0.5 and 1.0 for both the bean and the white ash. Author
