Doubly Curved Triangular Finite Elements for Shells of Arbitrary Shape.

A doubly curved triangular finite element, suitable for the small deformation analysis of thin shells containing cutouts and irregular boundaries, is described. The element chosen represents the middle surface of the undeformed shell exactly it contains, in addition to its three vertex nodes, three mid-side nodes that may, if desired, be condensed out of the analysis. The six node version comprised 30 degrees of freedom while its condensed version comprises only 27 degrees of freedom. Two sides of the element lie along line of curvature coordinates the remaining side is free to represent cutouts or irregular boundaries. The results of this evaluation indicate that, with relatively coarse grids, both versions of the present element can perform capably in the analysis of thin shells, with or without cutouts. Author
