In a previous 1973 study it was suggested that the apparent lack of increased impact of task relevant attitudinal similarity in choice of group discussion partners could be interpreted as due to either a the subjects perceiving the task relevant information as redundant, andor b subjects overestimating the degree of agreement between themselves and the other potential group members on task relevant attitudes when there was high agreement on general attitudes. The present study tested these two alternatives in a factorial design manipulating sex of the others, proportion of relevant information, task relevant attitude similarity-dissimilarity, and overall attitude similarity-dissimilarity.
