The work was intended to examine the interactions between the plastic zone at the tip of an advancing crack and the elastic stress field generated by a pre-existing micro-crack in its path. It was anticipated that diffusion bonding would provide a means for preparing specimens which were essentially perfect except for micro-cracks which were to be introduced by machining very small notches in the mating surfaces before bonding. It was found that diffusion bonding of Ti-6Al-4V alloy produced either very good or very poor bonds. The conditions required for the production of very good bonds made the introduction of micro-cracks unfeasible. Perfect bonds were obtained in Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Author
