Experimental results of hypervelocity impact of small nylon and water spheres on wrought steel plate are reported. Measurements of backface bulge height or spall gap thickness are shown as a function of impact velocity. An empirical spall damage relation is derived. It is suggested that this be used as a working model for incipient, complete and backface 2-d spall. Author
