Abstract:
During the past few years a variety of designs of air cushion vehicle for overland applications has emerged. They may be grouped into three categories self-propelled, fully air cushion supported vehicle air cushion trailer and air cushion--surface contacting hybrid vehicle. Although a number of trials have been carried out to assess the performance of these vehicles with differing characteristics, their potential roles in cross-country transport have not been investigated in a systematic way. The report attempts to provide a general methodology for assessing the performance of these three basic types of air cushion vehicle from techno-economic viewpoints.
