Abstract:

During the past year of work on this contract, substantial progress has been made toward the research goal of understanding the development and nature of turbulence generated from a source of free streaming energy within a collisionless plasma. The authors have concentrated this year on the case in which a powerful beam of energetic electrons is externally generated and injected into a target plasma to heat it. Our calculations indicate the possibility of efficiently coupling the large beam energy into a magnetized target plasma during the very brief transit time of the beam, provided that the beam quality is sufficiently high, and that the beam energy and density are adjusted to optimize the primary beam-plasma turbulent interaction. In addition an analyses was made which revealed conditions for the equilibria and stability of unneutralized electron beams propagating along a magnetic guide field. Modified author abstract
