Abstract:
Operational results of a brief evaluation of the suitability of Hastings-Raydist Micro-Omega for use in the coastal confluence region are presented. Micro-Omega is an experimental system providing a real-time differential Omega navigational capability in the lower Chesapeake Bay area. Available Omega lines-of-position LOPs were compared navigationally against the accurate Hastings-Raydist system installed at the entrance to Chesapeake Bay. Equipment functioned reliably. Fix comparisons were made under conditions of steady-steaming, maneuvering, and at several fixed sites under varying weather conditions. An accuracy of 0.25 nmi cep was obtained at fixed sites, 0.34 nmi underway within 15 nmi of the Micro-Omega base station and 0.66 nmi at the 100-fathom curve, 80 nmi from the base station. Underway results may include degradation due to tracking lag. Modified author abstract
