Abstract:
The study was carried out to determine the feasibility of using partially disrupted microorganisms in conjunction with intact cells to accelerate the oxidative degradation of hydrocarbons. Initially, 40 plus organisms were isolated which were capable of degrading some fraction of Bunker C residual fuel oil. These organisms spanned the spectrum of genera from Micrococci to Streptomyces. Those organisms capable of degrading various hydrocarbon fractions were isolated not only from the oil rich sources, but from university culture collections. Various recipes of organisms were tested under laboratory and large scale conditions to determine their effectiveness in degrading Bunker C residual fuel oil. Author
