Abstract:

In the development of large gas dynamic lasers GDL which are required to be mobile and possibly air-borne the problem of assuring a positive start of the system without exhaust pumps becomes of great importance, especially when laser power extraction is sought to be increased by the use of cavities-in-series. A morphological analysis of such systems as well as a method of determining the transient states during a starting process is presented here with a brief account of the current status of the gas dynamic lasers. It is concluded that there are no problems which may basically prevent the adoption of cavities-in-series configurations in GDL however, each system has to be optimized with respect to the expansion and cavity dynamics as well as the cavity optics.
