The purpose of the paper was to study the value of various data available in officers efficiency files in improving the various selection processes. Through survey and interview techniques, eleven merit indicators were isolated for in-depth examination. Findings derived from the one officer population considered by the study show clearly that four specific items of information were of a much greater significance than any other information in predicting the probability of promotion of an officer his late-career most recent four years manner of performance, his performance of duty while in combat, his performance as a battalion commander, and his performance on higher level staffs.
