The paper presents a brief summary of progress during the first year of a research program directed toward mathematical approximation of complex aerospace systems. It discusses both theoretical and computational findings associated with the use of certain families of orthonormal functions operator norms for approximation of a complex system in a manner which retains all significant characteristics but omits superfluous detail. It also indicates the areas of future work and the application of such approximation schemes to problems in modeling of integrated circuits, in mechanical vibrations, in numerical integration, and in spectral analysis.
