Abstract:

The carrying of loads by the infantry involves three distinct problems The capacity of the load-carrying equipment, particularly the pack, in relation to the requirements of various combat missions the weight of the load, in relation to the physiological limitations of the soldier himself the carrying of man-portable equipment assigned by the TO and E to various military occupational specialists in the infantry company, and other special items of organizational equipment. The study brings these problems into perspective, both in relation to what has been done in the past, and what is currently in progress. It also indicates some special aspects that should be of concern to designers of equipment intended to be man-portable.
