The authors present a series of profiles of atmospheric temperature and optical refractive-index structure measured to 3 km above the surface. Measurements were made with probes mounted on a moving carriage on ERLs 150-m tower near Haswell, Colorado, and from aircraft-mounted probes flow over eastern Colorado and over the Pacific Ocean southwest of San Diego, California. A brief review of accepted models and theories of height dependence of C sub n, sup 2 is included for comparison with the experimental data. Author
