Abstract:

A particle identification instrument for measurement of protons, deuterons, tritons, 3He and 4He has been designed and fabricated, and it was launched on Air Force satellite S72-1 in October 1972. The instrument is basically a telescope arrangement that makes use of four silicon detectors with a plastic anticoincidence shield. Proton spectra are determined within the range 4-45 MeV, and alpha spectra between 18 and 70 MeV, with intermediate energy ranges for the other particles. Design, calibration and high quality flight results are reported, and recommendations are made for certain instrumental modifications based on these results. Author
