The survey reviews the suitability of certain steels for both conventional designs and unconventional designs of small to medium size cartridge cases up to 40 mm. Discussed are various types of steels, their costs, fabrication characteristics, fracture toughness, and the effects of high strain rates on properties of these alloys. Detailed data are included for 20 specific alloys with yield strengths in the range of 80 to 200 kpsi. Data are included also for low-strength drawing steels and a high-strength copper alloy. Author
