Feasibility Study for the Sub-Bottom Investigation of the Surf Zone.

A feasibility study based on current literature was conducted on availability, means, and potential of obtaining usable subbottom geophysical data, core samples and mass physical properties of sediments in the surf zone. Data retrieval in the surf zone would supplement existing data for both beach areas and the Inner Continental Shelf. Results show that high resolution seismic reflection techniques offer greatest promise for information of subbottom structure however, research in obtaining reliable acoustical measurements is necessary for proper equipment design. A mobile airtrack vehicle offers the greatest possibility of platform use in obtaining 20-foot vibratory cores and in situ geotechnical measurements, while for deeper borings probably the best system is a conventional drill system mounted on a walking platform or self-propelled elevated unit.
