Abstract:

Minimum-mass designs of a damped, linear, continuous sandwich beam are obtained using two different constrained optimal design approaches. The minimum-mass problem is first formulated with a constraint upon the maximum beam response amplitude, and then the problem of minimum-mass with a constraint upon the beam first resonant frequency is treated. In both cases, the constraint is handled using the method of exterior penalty functions, and the optimal designs are obtained using a gradient steepest descent algorithm.
