Greenup Dam spillway now being constructed on the Ohio River will consist of nine 100-ft-wide gate bays, flow through which will be regulated by five submergible and four nonsubmergible tainter gates. A horizontal apron surmounted by baffle piers and an end sill will dissipate energy created by flow passing over or under the tainter gates. Bulkheads will be provided for emergency closure of the spillway bays. Investigations conducted in a 125-scale section model reproducing one gate bay and adjacent half bays were concerned with a hoist loads and vibration tendencies of the submergible tainter gate b the performance of the stilling basin below both the submergible and nonsubmergible gates and c hydraulic forces acting in a vertical direction on the emergency bulkheads when they were operated in one-, two-, three-, and four-bulkhead units.
