Abstract:

Operational research was born and brought up in wartime Britain, and systems analysis in Robert McNamaras Pentagon. Hence, although both activities may now be better known in the civilian world, their origins lie in the world of defence. And, in Canada, the Department of National Defence was the first to recognize the value of operational research and to institute groups to carry it out on a continuing professional basis. The paper sketches some of the milestones in its development, and describes how much of the work done by the operational research organizations slowly metamorphasized in character into what is now called systems analysis.
