The influence of heat treatment on the stress-corrosion susceptibility of a ternary Al-5.3Zn-2.5Mg alloy has been examined in terms of four variables. These variables are the cooling rate from the solution treatment temperature, holding time at room temperature, aging time at a temperature below the G.P. zone solvus and aging time at a temperature above the G.P. zone solvus. Variables which markedly influence the stress-corrosion susceptibility of the Al-Zn-Mg alloys were found to be the cooling rate after solution treatment and the aging time at temperature above the G.P. zone solvus. These results are discussed in terms of variations in the grain boundary microstructure. Author
