Abstract:

Simple general arguments are used to show that for instabilities resulting from the coupling of two weakly damped linear modes with oppositely directed group velocities, such as the various parametric instabilities, there exists a range of coupling strengths pump power in the parametric case for which the instability is convective above this range the system is absolutely unstable. The ratio of absolute and convective instability thresholds is large whenever the damping lengths of the linear uncoupled modes have very disparate values. Author
