Abstract:

The 30 mm XM553 projectile provided an example for illustrating, by means of an existing computer program, how the magnitude of the important static properties of an axisymmetric projectile are affected by variations in length and weight. The program computes static properties from the individual conic sections making up the overall configuration. This decomposition of the projectile must be manually performed and the results fed into the program in a predescribed format. The program will determine the total weight, the axial and transverse moments of inertia, and the location of the center of gravity of any axisymmetric projectile. Author
