A number of alpha-substituted ketones and related compounds are capable of inducing the chemiluminescence of 5-amino-2,3-dihydro-1,4-phthalazinedione luminol with hydrogen peroxide in basic solution. The reaction apparently involves formation of intermediate hydroperoxides from attack of nucleophilic hydroperoxide anion on the carbonyl activated by the a-moiety. The intermediate oxidizes the luminol to give the characteristic chemiluminescence. Author
