Abstract:
Tests were conducted on a 120-scale hydraulic model of the 86-ft-wide by 688-ft-long Sacramento Barge Canal Lock to assure the adequacy of the proposed method of filling and emptying the lock. Since reverse-head conditions will occur at the lock, it is to be equipped with sector gates, and filling and emptying is to be accomplished by passing flow between the gate leaves and around each leaf through the recess. Maximum heads of 21 ft with the river stage higher than the harbor stage and 3.6 ft with the harbor stage higher than the river stage are anticipated. The model was used to develop gate-operating schedules that would provide minimum filling and emptying times with hawser stresses for tows moored in the lock chamber and lock approaches kept within the permissible limit of 5 tons.
