Abstract:

The semi and photoconductive properties of selected, low molecular weight polymers were investigated. N-Ethynylcarbazole and 9-ethynylanthracene were synthesized. Their monomers were polymerized thermally. The conductivities of these polymers were found to be 1000 times larger than those of the corresponding poly vinyl compounds. However, photoconductivities could not be detected for these polymers. Eleven selected arylethynyl copper compounds were synthesized from the corresponding acetylenic compounds with cuprous salts. These polymers have semi- and photoconductivities. It was also found that the electrical conductivities of polymers were greatly increased by the addition of a small amount of nitrocellulose. In environment of dry air the conductivities were also higher than those in vacuum. The phenomenon was accounted for. Electrical properties of other compounds such as polymers containing triple bond, poly p-phenylene sulfides and poly disulfide, cyclic aza compounds, mercury and silver N-carbazolyl ethynylides were also investigated.
