Abstract:
Three problems are investigated The impurity problem in semiconductors, the dynamics of electrons in a magnetic field, and the density of states approach to the behavior of electrons in an electric field. A number of general theorems are proven for the impurity problem in semiconductors. It is rigorously shown that a local perturbation of a Bloch Hamiltonian does not affect the band structure, but rather leads to the formation of bound states. These are known as the impurity states, and it is shown that they have no accumulation point in the band gaps. In the case of the electric field the stability of bands is described by means of a spectral density operator. For the magnetic field problem model Hamiltonians are constructed for the investigation of the influence of the rationality of the field on the spectrum and the density of states.
