Abstract:
The Civilian Conservation Corps CCC is evaluated as a possible solution to current social and environmental ills. The nine year history of the CCC is reviewed to determine accomplishments and failures of the program created in 1933 to save wasted youth and land. An attempt is made to correlate the problems of the 1930s with those existing today unemployment, discontent among young people, a polluted environment, and wasted natural resources. An appraisal of the Job Corps program suggests that the CCC might again be desirable if it parallels the original program, retaining conservation as the key, and using the Army, as before, in a major supervisory role.
